This Founders' Day, as I join all of you in reflecting on the history of our beloved Fraternity, now 116 years young, I continue to be awed by the innumerable accomplishments of Tau Kappa Epsilon. After all, without it, we would not be where we are today. Martin, the first Grand Prytanis, was once quoted saying that our Founders set out to create an organization for the development of men to enable them to cope with the world when their school days were over and when they would be forced against the stern realities of life.. o How can we become the anchor institution for the region? I wanted to take a moment to share my journey. Yet as the campus matured, it was clear that we could become an even more valuable asset to the State of Maryland and the nation. Michael Hooker began to expand UMBCs aspirations at his installation as fourth chancellor in 1986 when he said, My [vision] is for UMBC to be a model university for the twenty-first century, and to be the best public university of its size in the country. UMBC was, therefore, founded at a time of great expansion in access to higher education, and we were expected to play a key role in facilitating that growth in Maryland. To showcase living our values of love, charity and esteem. Founders Day provides us the opportunity to reflect briefly on our university's history, to highlight important recent accomplishments, and to describe some of our vision for its future.
